William Close To Release 'Holidays' Album (Out November 4)

Nettwerk recording artist William Close & The Earth Harp Collective – a team of musicians, dancers, aerialists and artists - will release Holidays on November 4. Installation artist, musician and America’s Got Talent finalist William Close has built over 100 one-of-a-kind musical instruments, including the world’s largest string instrument, The Earth Harp. “It’s an instrument unlike anything Bach or Beethoven could have ever imagined,” writes The New York Times.

The re-recorded album is a collection of holiday classics, now featuring guest performances from singer-songwriters Landon Pigg, Lily Kershaw and Gareth Dunlap. Pigg lends his voice on the inspired cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River.” No stranger to collaboration, Pigg has also contributed tracks for several soundtracks, including Shrek Forever After and Whip It, in which Pigg had a supporting role opposite Ellen Page. Also on the album, fellow Nettwerk artist Gareth Dunlap on “We Three Kings” and label-mate Lily Kershaw on “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Kershaw, whose vocals transform this soulful holiday classic originally sung by Darlene Love, saw her own track “As It Seems” reach #1 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter Chart after being featured on CBS series, Criminal Minds.

At the forefront of Holidays is The Earth Harp. Developed by Close, the body of the instrument rests on the stage, while the strings travel over the audience, attaching to the back of the theatre, concert hall and/or festival ground, turning every space into an instrument. By rubbing violin rosin covered gloves along the strings, Close delivers The Harp’s signature bowed sound.

“Unlike any other instrument, The Earth Harp reimagines and reinvents these holiday classics to create it’s own lush, symphonic sound. It’s like having a full orchestral string section at your fingertips,” says Close.

Close studied sculpture and sound design at the Art Institute of Chicago. His installations and performances have been experienced around the world – including The Coliseum in Rome, The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, The Seattle Space Needle, the temples of Vietnam, Grand Theater of Shanghai International Arts Festival, Brazil’s Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, The Dhow Harbour in Qatar, and major US festivals like Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bumbershoot, Burning Man, Lightning In A Bottle, and more. The Earth Harp is a permanent installation for Cirque du Soleil show, KA, at the MGM Las Vegas.
